Tteokbokki Night: Chewy, Spicy, Comforting (Easy at Home)

Tteokbokki Night: Chewy, Spicy, Comforting (Easy at Home)

Chewy, saucy and just spicy enough, tteokbokki is the Korean comfort food South Africans are falling for, and it is made for a cold July night. The texture is the point: soft, bouncy rice cakes in a glossy red sauce.

What You'll Need

  • 1 pack tteokbokki rice cakes (a Bibigo cup or pack, or CJW rice cakes)
  • Sauce sachet from the pack, or 1 tbsp gochujang plus 1 tsp sugar and a splash of soy
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 egg per person, boiled and halved
  • 2 spring onions, sliced
  • A spoon of kimchi and a slice of cheese, to serve (optional)

Method in a Nutshell

  1. Bring the water and sauce to a simmer in a small pot.
  2. Add the rice cakes and stir for 5 to 8 minutes (follow the pack), until soft and the sauce coats them.
  3. Top with egg and spring onion.
  4. For extra: melt a slice of cheese over it, or serve with kimchi on the side to cut the richness.

Make it yours

Add fish cakes, cabbage or a handful of noodles. Want it hotter? Stir in a pinch of gochugaru (Korean chilli flakes).
